Refining the Breath


Breathing is a fundamental and often overlooked bodily function that is essential for sustaining life. Through the process of inhaling and exhaling, our bodies are able to intake oxygen and release carbon dioxide, allowing our cells to produce energy and function properly. Our bodies breath naturally, and the act of breathing is controlled by the autonomic nervous system.

However, it is important to note that the quality of our breath can greatly impact our overall well-being. Sometimes life’s stressors and ailments can “take our breath away” causing improper breathing techniques contributing to dis-ease.

By becoming more aware of our breath and practicing proper breathing techniques, we can improve our physical and mental health, leading to a higher quality of life. Proper breathing can:

  • Improve bodily functions by lowering the blood pressure
  • lower heart rate
  • reduce stress hormones in the blood
  • reduce lactic acid
  • balance levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood
  • improve immune system functioning
  • increases physical energy

In this workshop we will practice various breathing techniques. We will learn several yogic techniques for deep breathing, relaxing the mind and body, and increasing the vitality and energy of the body. This workshop will include the anatomy, physiology of breathing and yoga philosophy of prana, energy.
